The climate crisis is not a distant threat. It is already affecting young people’s health, education, livelihoods, families, and sense of security about the future.
In Japan’s first youth climate lawsuit, 17 young plaintiffs are asking the Nagoya District Court to require 10 major electric utilities, whose emissions account for approximately 30% of Japan’s total CO₂ emissions, to make science-aligned reductions consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
At this youth-led event, three Japanese plaintiffs will share why they chose to take legal action and how the climate crisis is affecting their lives. Following an accessible introduction to Japan’s climate policy and the lawsuit, they will be joined by a youth climate plaintiff from the United States for an international panel discussion.
Drawing on experiences from Japan, the United States, and exchanges with other young climate litigants around the world, the panel will explore corporate climate accountability, young people’s rights, and the role of climate litigation in accelerating action. The discussion will also consider how young plaintiffs across borders can learn from one another and strengthen international solidarity for climate justice.
This free event is open to climate litigants, activists, NGOs, legal professionals, journalists, students, and anyone interested in youth-led climate justice.
